Although the tricolour is normally the only national colour which may be flown by Irish shipping, there is one exception to this rule: yachts which are registered with certain yacht clubs are permitted to fly the ensign of the club to which they belong instead of the national flag. All of the club ensigns have the same general design, i.e. the national flag appears in the canton and a club badge in the fly. The field is usually blue but there are some exceptions, as can be seen from the examples shown below:
