The county flags in popular use all derive from the colours used by county teams in football and hurling. It would be more accurate to describe them as county colours than as county flags: different designs are often seen side by side - the order of the colours may vary or they may be disposed horizontally rather than vertically. More complex designs can also be found - flags divided into squares for example - but vertical stripes are the most common pattern.
