First Viking Raid On Ireland
Lambay island was called Reachta about a thousand years ago. It was about the time the Vikings first appeared around Ireland. They came about 795 A.D. All of Fingal was called Bregia back then. There was a monastic settlement on Lambay. There was also a monastic settlement on Ireland's Eye. Lambay was devastated in 795 A.D. when Viking ships came and attacked the Island. They got into the monastery and took gold and silver chalices with beautiful gems. They melted the chalices for the gold and silver and kept the gems to sell. They also took books and ripped them up and kept the covers to sell. This was one of the first Viking raids on Ireland.
